Shield

The shielding of a coaxial cable is indeed critical to its performance and reliability, especially in environments where electromagnetic interference (EMI) or electrostatic discharge (ESD) can occur. The shielding consists of conductive materials that serve to shield external interference and maintain signal integrity.

The cables you offer provide a variety of shielding options, including single, double and triple layers of shielding. Each of these shielding options provides varying degrees of protection from electromagnetic interference, with the number of shield layers and the type of materials used playing an important role.

The various material options for the shielding include:

  1. Copper braid: A braid of copper wires that provides robust and effective shielding against EMI and ESD. Copper braid is a common choice due to its high conductivity and ability to provide uniform coverage.
  2. Tin-plated copper braid: Similar to copper braid, but coated with a layer of tin. This improves corrosion resistance and can increase the longevity of the shielding.
  3. CuAg braid: Copper braid coated with a layer of silver. Silver has an even higher conductivity than copper and can therefore offer an improved shielding effect.
  4. Cu foil: A foil made of copper that is tightly wrapped around the cable. Copper foil provides a good shielding effect and can provide uniform coverage.
  5. Al foil: A foil made of aluminium that is used as a shielding layer. Aluminium foil provides effective shielding against EMI and is often a less expensive alternative to copper foil.

The choice of shielding material depends on the specific requirements of the application, including the level of shielding required, the environment in which the cable will be used and the budget. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of conductivity, corrosion resistance, flexibility and cost, which should be considered when making a selection.
