PTFE
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), known by the brand name Teflon®, is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable polymer materials used in a variety of applications. Its unique properties make it a favourite in industries that have extreme environmental conditions and the highest demands for performance and reliability.
One of the outstanding properties of PTFE is its exceptional temperature resistance. It can withstand temperatures of up to 260°C without compromising its structural integrity or chemical properties. This property makes it an ideal material for applications exposed to high temperatures, whether in the chemical industry, aerospace or food processing.
In addition, PTFE offers excellent solvent resistance, which means that it is inert to a wide range of chemicals and is not easily affected by them. In terms of its electrical properties, PTFE is considered one of the best insulating materials available. It has a very low dielectric constant and extremely low dielectric loss, making it an ideal material for high-frequency and microwave applications, including the manufacture of cable insulators, connectors and antennas.
However, it is important to note that PTFE is also associated with high material costs. The production of PTFE requires specialised processes and technologies, which leads to higher production costs. Nevertheless, the unique properties of PTFE are often worth the higher cost value, especially in applications where the highest performance and reliability are required.
