Halogen-free

Insulating materials that are free of halogens such as bromine, chlorine, fluorine and iodine play an important role in the fire properties of cables and other electrical equipment. Halogen-free materials are favoured as they tend to release less toxic gases and corrosive acids in the event of fire, which increases safety.

Cables that comply with these standards use halogen-free and flame-retardant sheath materials that ensure low smoke development in the event of a fire. This is particularly important for indoor installations and buildings where there is a requirement to minimise fire hazards. Compliance with these standards, such as IEC60332-3 and DIN VDE 0472-804, ensures that the cables meet the required safety standards.

There are various designations for halogen-free sheath materials, including

  • LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free)
  • LS0H (Low Smoke 0 (zero) Halogen)
  • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen)
  • FRNC (Flame Resistant, No Chloride)

The designations ‘Low Smoke’ mean that the cable material produces very little smoke in the event of a fire, while ‘Zero Halogen’ indicates that it is halogen-free. These properties help to increase safety in the event of a fire and minimise the spread of toxic smoke.
