FRNC – Flame Retardant Non Corrosive
FRNC stands for ‘Flame Resistant, No Chloride’ and is also referred to as LSNH, ‘Low Smoke, No Halogen’. These abbreviations refer to insulating materials that have been specially developed for applications where fire protection and safety are a high priority.
These materials are particularly recommended for use in indoor medical applications as they are halogen-free and ensure low smoke development in the event of fire. They are also UV-stable and self-extinguishing, which means that they will not continue to burn once the source of the fire is removed.
An example of a cable with these properties is the arnoflex 58 LSNH. Such cables are made of halogen-free and flame-retardant sheath material, which means that they produce little smoke in the event of a fire and therefore increase safety. These properties are specified in various standards, including IEC60332-3 and DIN VDE 0472-804, and are therefore mandatory for fixed installations in indoor areas and buildings.
Halogen-free means that the product is free from halogens such as bromine, chlorine, fluorine and iodine. This is important because materials containing halogens can release toxic gases and corrosive acids in the event of fire, which can endanger health and damage electronic devices. The use of halogen-free materials minimises the risk of such hazards and increases safety.
